Contractions

The pain would have been excruciating if she felt pain. Thankfully, she did not. Still, she was barely able to stand as her legs shook. She held out a hand for balance and braced it on the wall as she wobbled her way down a narrow hallway. It was so dark inside, she could barely make out anything.

Her trip ended as she slammed into what she thought was a wall. She let out a grunt, but recovered quickly as she placed both of her hands out. Her left hand landed on something protruding from the wall. It was hard and round. In her half-dead state, she had lost a lot of sensation in her extremities, but she knew it was a door handle.

She gripped the handle, thinking it had to be locked, but when she turned it, she heard a set of clicks and the door became slightly ajar. An odor wafted out from the opening. Something familiar, but along with the lack of sensation in her hands and feet, her olfactory senses had been dulled.

The only way to know was to open the door, but she didn’t rip it open like her internal fury wanted to. Instead, she cautiously opened it.

The sound hit her first.

Moans and groans. Just as familiar as the odor.

It took a few seconds for her eyes to adjust. The room was larger than she expected. Probably sixty feet by forty.

Muted winter light filtered in through windows high on the walls opposite of the doorway she was standing in. These windows ran the entire length of the room. The light spread in a criss-crossing pattern over the floor because it was coming through a heavy-chain link cage. The cage was fifteen feet deep and ran half the link of the room.

But what was in this cage was what caught her attention. It was full of the undead and they had noticed her. Or better put, they felt her.

Her magical and magnetic pull had gotten their full attention, and they wanted to be near her. Just like all the zombies she had been around since she was turned into this half-dead creature. A question bloomed in her mind. What is this place?

Zombies didn’t have emotions, but it was as if they had gone into a controlled frenzy, clawing and tugging at the cage. Their utterances increased as they grunted and groaned. These sounds echoed in the small room, filling it until she felt their groans inside her head.

From the things she had stumbled across already, she surmised it was a medical facility or even a research center. But what kind of place keeps zombies penned up like that?

The zombie’s moans and grunts got louder as they pawed at the cage. Something deep inside them compelled them to get closer to her. They wanted out. They wanted to be near her. They just had to be.

The next thought was that she could not have her baby here. Not among the dead. That just couldn’t happen, but she also knew the building was surrounded by them.
